Most planners work for:
- Local authorities, such as city and district councils
- Government departments
- Private consulting firms
Planners work independently and in teams. They may supervise planning teams and other staff, either permanently or for single projects. They also have contact with:
- The public and community groups
- Other professionals, especially engineers, lawyers, architects, environmental scientists, surveyors, archaeologists and urban designers
- Politicians
- Government departments
- Local authorities
- Environmental courts
- Regional and district councils
- Local iwi and hapûûûûûûûû
- Private consultancies and environmental agencies.
