Our Pōwhiri is a special part of NZPI conferences. Whether you have a full understanding of tikanga and are able to kōrero in te reo Māori or you’re new to a Pōwhiri experience, everyone is welcome. In fact the Pōwhiri is a welcome, welcoming delegates to the 2024 NZPI conference and making sure that people from all backgrounds and cultures are ready to come together and take part in important discussions about planning in Aotearoa.

Each year Papa Pounamu, our special interest group for Māori Planning practitioners, support tangata whenua from the host region to welcome manuhiri (visitors) to conference.

This year our Powhiri will take place at Te Kōpū Mānia Marae. This marae sits within the Wintec Te Pūkenga City Campus. Described as a multipurpose area where ākonga (students) and kaimahi (staff) can conduct and experience teaching, learning and pastoral support, this urban marae isn’t affiliated with any one iwi, hāpu or whanau, although it does uphold the tikanga of Waikato-Tainui and the Kiingitanga and Papa Pounamu will provide the connection with Waikato iwi.

The Pōwhiri will commence at 8am on Wednesday 20th March at Te Kōpū Mānia Marae on the Wintec Te Pūkenga City Campus. If you’re not familiar with a Pōwhiri you can find out about the do’s and don’ts HERE. We strongly encourage you to attend this Pōwhiri and be part of this integral custom of being welcomed to the Waikato and to NZPIC24.
