Dr John Benseman has an extensive background in education with a specific interest in adult learning. He has worked as a teacher, programme planner, evaluator and researcher in a wide range of educational contexts, including universities, institutes of technology, community organisations and government departments. He has also run a private consultancy where his experience included local and regional governments, private companies and membership organisations. He has helped develop continuing professional development programmes with general practitioners, medical specialists, dentists, teachers of adults and local government staff. Over recent years, John has worked internationally with UNESCO, the OECD and national bodies in Canada, Australia, Norway, England and the US.

John's role in the Institute is to help develop a full range of CPD activities that meet the learning needs of the members and promote the ideals of the profession. Initially he will be reviewing the current range of provision and formats and set up processes to gather information from a range of sources to inform the Institute's CPD planning processes. An important aim for the CPD team is to develop a range of different delivery formats that maximise accessibility for members throughout the country, especially with online learning packs and website resources, but also with an expanded range of courses.
