The Ministry for Primary Industries has launched consultation on the subject matter of a proposed National Environmental Standard for Plantation Forestry (NES-PF). If implemented, an NES-PF would change how plantation forestry activities are regulated under the Resource Management Act 1991. An NES would introduce a single set of planning rules that is consistent nationally and better targeted to local environmental conditions. Although an NES is a national regulation the use of environmental risk assessment tools would ensure it remains responsive to local environments. It would also allow councils to retain flexibility in relation to some matters.

MPI would like to canvas a wide range of views and information about the proposed NES-PF. To learn more about the proposal and how to submit, please see the consultation material on the MPI website at: www.mpi.govt.nz/nes-pf. This material includes a consultation document and a number of related technical reports. During the consultation period, public meetings and hui will be held around the country. Details of these meetings are also available from the above link. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to NES-PFConsultation@mpi.govt.nz (please include the meeting you wish to attend and the names of those attending in your RSVP).

All submissions must be received by 5pm, Tuesday 11 August.
