Thank you to those who have registered their interest in Papa Pounamu. This panui sets out the areas of work Papa Pounamu are looking to progress in the short to medium term.

Papa Pounamu Hui

We’re grateful for all the support for the Papa Pounamu 14 April hui as part of the annual New Zealand Planning Institute (NZPI) Auckland 2015 conference programme. We received a lot of great feedback during and following the hui. Again we want to thank our speakers and guests. It was a great time to reconnect with whānau working in the planning profession and to make new connections.

In prioritising our focus for the future Papa Pounamu are confirming intentions and commitments for ongoing planning hui and the frequency of these. Once we have done this we will work closely with the Dunedin 2016 NZPI Conference Committee and the NZPI Board to ensure sessions are available that cover the importance of the integration of mātauranga Māori in the planning practice.

Moving Forward – Papa Pounamu Branches

Since our hui in April, the committee members of Papa Pounamu have been evaluating our strategic options and where we want to be in future. Moving forward we are keen to get traction with our membership, including establishing Papa Pounamu regional branches in Waikato and Tāmaki Makaurau. Whakawhanaungatanga events for the two regions are being organised with a date confirmed for the Waikato branch event - 13th of November 2015. If you wish to register your interest and receive updates leading up to the event, please email Jess Samuels jmisamuels@live.com.

Arrangements are still in progress to host an event in Tāmaki Makaurau. If you are in the Tāmaki region and is interested in attending this event, and maybe also wish to help with the event (provision of a venue and/or sponsorship), please register your interest (and support) with Lara Taylor lara.taylor@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz.

If you haven’t already you can formally register with Papa Pounamu via the following link: www.papapounamu.org. This way we can ensure planners living or working in these areas will be notified of branch events.

Pasifika Planner’s Talanoa

Following an initial discussion during the NZPI conference in April the first Papa Pounamu Pasifika Planners’ hui was held in early July.

The key focus of the meeting was determining what shape the group should have. A Papa Pounamu subcommittee was requested and approved in the September 2015 Papa Pounamu meeting. The group have started developing a collective vision, and strategic plan to support planners in New Zealand and back in the Islands. There is a desire and aspiration to connect with and support other Pasifika professionals and to link in with other bodies such as that of Auckland Council. Anyone interested in joining the subcommittee please email Namouta Poutasi at namouta.poutasi@boprc.govt.nz.

Papa Pounamu Website

Papa Pounamu want to acknowledge the support provided by NZPI in establishing our website. The website is new and we want to develop it into a useful resource providing examples of best practice resources for dealing with matters relating specifically to iwi resource management across the mōtū. The website is a work in progress and will be refined and developed over time.

Thank you once again for your interest and continued support as we map out the future of Papa Pounamu. For ways you can be involved please email Reginald Proffit at reginald.proffit@gdc.govt.nz.

Nga mihi
