David’s nomination was for work across two areas. Firstly, his leadership of multidisciplinary teams on the master planning of award-winning residential communities, and secondly for his contribution on a pro bono basis to a number of causes of significance to the planning and wider community.
David’s practice Construkt Associates has been responsible for masterplanning some of Auckland’s largest and most highly regarded new residential communities, including Todd Properties Long Bay project and the first two precincts of Hobsonville Point, the latter in joint venture with Isthmus.
Within both projects, Construkt under David’s leadership, developed and tested innovative development controls that were negotiated and adopted by the Territorial Authorities. Working closely with the consultant planner award winning Comprehensive Development Plans were prepared for Hobsonville Point.
Outside of his practice, David has over a very long period of time contributed his expertise on a pro bono basis to a number of resource management and environmental campaigns. He led the participation of NZIA, Urban Design Forum and Generation Zero within the Auckland Plan and Unitary Plan hearings. He was able to rally a team that at times exceeded 60 professionals across architecture, planning, landscape architecture and urban design to make what was widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive submissions to the Unitary Plan. That involvement spanned three years in total.
David has prepared expert urban design evidence to the High Court and Environment Court on a number of environment protection causes including opposition to encroachment into Waitemata Harbor and loss of public space to private development.
