NZPI Annual Awards celebrate the important role of the planning profession in the community and highlight the best of the best from around the country. They are presented at the NZPI Conference.

Nominations/Applications for the NZPI 2024 Annual Awards, Scholarships and Grants have been extended.

NZPI Best Practice Awards

Best practice awards are made to an individual NZPI Member, or to any organisation, group, or body whose members include members of the New Zealand Planning Institute. The Best Practice awards recognise outstanding creativity, innovation, and service. So, if you have a project, no matter how small or large, that is innovative and reflects best practice then please take the opportunity to celebrate and share your work and learnings by submitting a nomination to the NZPI Annual Awards.

The Awards Committee select the winner of the Nancy Northcroft Planning Practice Award, NZPI's supreme practice award from the winners of the best practice categories and the Rodney Davies Project Award.

The NZPI awards celebrate best practice in the following categories:

This award recognises projects that exemplify excellence in statutory planning.

The category is broad, and may include projects relating to consenting, policy and plan-making, and the innovative development and use of statutory tools, and related research.

This award recognises the work of planners in developing and implementing innovative policies, plans and projects to address climate change issues in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

This award recognises policies, plans, and projects which produced outcomes promoting inclusive communities and/or enhanced the health and wellbeing of communities. Community diversity is defined in the broadest terms including ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation, socio-economic status etc.

This award recognises excellence in the development of innovative digital tools which enhance and facilitate the practice of planning.

This award recognises projects that exemplify excellence in strategic planning.

The category is broad, and may include projects that are strategic or non-statutory in nature relating to strategic planning, spatial planning, management plans, and regional planning and related research.

NZPI Rodney Davies Project Award

This award recognises innovation and creative excellence in the undertaking and completion of a physical work or project that facilitated excellence in the practice of planning.

Awarding Other Areas of Excellence

Other awards presented by NZPI recognise graduate planners who are emerging within the profession, planners who make a significant contribution to the profession by extending the theory or practice of planning, and the outstanding service of non-planners.

This award is for a meritorious contribution to the establishment and development of a distinctive Aotearoa/New Zealand Planning Kaupapa/Planning Framework.

This award is intended to recognise a significant contribution by a NZPI student, graduate or Intermediate (emerging planner) member to planning practice, the mana of the profession, planning research or Institute affairs at the local or branch level in the first 8 years of their membership. The award is presented annually at the NZPI Conference and includes a financial contribution of $1,200.
