Where Do Planners Work

Most planners work for:

  • Local authorities, such as city and district councils
  • Government departments
  • Private consulting firms


Planners work independently and in teams. They may supervise planning teams and other staff, either permanently or for single projects. They also have contact with:

  • The public and community groups
  • Other professionals, especially engineers, lawyers, architects, environmental scientists, surveyors, archaeologists and urban designers
  • Politicians
  • Government departments
  • Local authorities
  • Environmental courts
  • Regional and district councils
  • Local iwi and hapu
  • Private consultancies and environmental agencies.
