Panel Discussion: 'Have our density and park
the car too' - the tug of war between private parking and urban growth'
More of us are moving to the cities, thriving in our urban environments, but
we aren't the only ones competing for space here, our cars are too. The
Auckland Unitary Plan made a game change when it reduced requirements for
parking provision in comparison to its predecessors. As Auckland's population
continues to grow, how will we manage the competing demands for space and
parking? Our panel of experts will discuss various views on parking in
Auckland, from policy development, how a city can develop to no longer rely
on parking, the developer perspective on what the market is looking for, and
our options as a city going forward. This CPD event will be a good way to
take a look at how demand for parking and space are developing in the region.
The four panellists are:
Stuart Crosswell – MR Cagney
Stuart is a Senior Planner with MRCagney and has led strategic parking
studies across New Zealand. Stuart was directly involved with the section 32
report The Economic Impacts of Parking Requirements in Auckland that supports
the approach taken in the Auckland Unitary Plan. Since then Stuart has been
working with other Councils to apply the same rationale within their city and
district plans.
David Welch - Cohaus
David is a co-Director of Cohaus, a collaborative project involving 20
families working together to build 20 units on a site in Grey Lynn. David
works as a Senior Lecturer in Computational Biology at the University of
Auckland.
Dr Lee Beattie - University of Auckland
Lee is a practicing urban designer and urban planner with over 25 years'
professional experience and is currently the Deputy Head of the University of
Auckland School of Architecture and Planning and the Director of their Master
of Urban Design Programme. He specialises in urban design and urban planning
policy implementation and evaluation, growth management and housing issues.
Tania Wong - Ockham Residential
Tania leads the in-house Architecture team at Ockham Residential,
specialising in the design and delivery of medium density apartment buildings.
Tania’s expertise is amply demonstrated by the enduring appeal of the
buildings that contribute to the Auckland mixed urban landscape with a
distinctly residential aesthetic utilising durable, low-maintenance
materials. A number of these projects have featured in the Auckland Council
Design Manual.
