The Hamilton CBD is rich with Maori culture and history at every corner you turn and you wouldn’t even know it. As planners, it is important for us to understand the Maori history in order to effectively assess the effects of development. There were numerous Māori Pa along the Waikato River. Each Pa were flourishing communities with established gardens, trade routes/walk paths, landing areas and moorings, as well as urupā, and altars. This event is a Waikato Emerging Planners initiative to enhance our awareness of these sites, and how we can consider these sites (and associated Māori values) in our planning practice.

In partnership with Papa Pounamu (NZPI's Māori Special Interest Group), the Waikato Emerging Planners branch is hosting a walking tour around the Hamilton CBD to visit and learn about the history of Māori/Archaeological Sites of Significance located within the Hamilton CBD.

We will be lucky enough to be led by, the one and only, James Whetu of Whetū Consultancy Group and a committee member of Papa Pounamu.

We will finish at Mr Pickles in the Hamilton City Centre for some platters/canapes after the tour.
