Dr Christina Hanna, Sian John and Dr Judy Lawrence examine the concept of managed retreats in the New Zealand context and considers opportunities for building capacity across the governance spectrum, from managed to unmanaged retreats.

Dr Christina Hanna - Christina is a lecturer at Waikato University. Christina's research examines the governance of risk reduction and climate change adaptation, with a focus on the role of environmental planning. An important research theme is the application of managed retreat to reduce risks to human lives, assets, and ecosystems.

Sian John - Environment Director for coastal and marine development, Royal HaskoningDHV currently working on the Coastal Management Collective in the Thames Coromandel district.. RHDHV is an international, non-listed engineering consultancy firm.

Dr Judy Lawrence - Judy is a Senior Research Fellow at the NZ Climate Change Research Institute, Victoria University of Wellington. Judy does research on climate change adaptation implementation issues (adaptive planning , institutional frameworks and funding measures) and decision making under conditions of uncertainty. her academic background is in Physical Geography and Public Policy.
