NZPI’s Wellbeing Survey has been released this week, providing a useful sample to evaluate the mood of planners and the planning profession.

In late 2023, NZPI conducted a Wellbeing Survey for the second year running. With 365 respondents, the survey provides a snapshot of the wellbeing of planning practitioners in Aotearoa New Zealand and those respondents who are members working overseas and matches this picture with broad demographic data. This survey provides an honest perspective on your workplace wellbeing.

While the 2023 Wellbeing Survey had less respondents and a smaller sample size than the previous year, it is an anonymous survey and provides a genuine and consistent reflection of the wellbeing of planners in Aotearoa New Zealand. It’s a useful tool for employers of planners when considering their leadership and their operational practices in the workplace.

Of particular interest are the qualitative comments, which fell under the key themes of Remote Working, Commuting, Self-Employment, Resource Management Reform and the Role of the Planner. In some respects the job is getting harder, particularly with uncertainty around changes to legislation, but the way we now work has also made it easier, with less time spent commuting and greater flexibility around lifestyle and family.

We’re grateful to all those who responded to the survey at a busy time and in such an honest and meaningful way. It is our intention to conduct a further Wellbeing Survey in late 2024.
