The NZPI has been aware for sometime that a change to the taxation legislation is causing problems for those who act as commissioners either as a self employed individual or as an employee of a firm.
The Institute has brought this matter to the governments attention as there is a concern that these taxation issues may deter planners from taking up commissioner roles.
The Ministry for the Environment which is responsible for the Making Good Decisions Programme (MGD) is also aware of the issue but in the short to medium term there seems little chance that the matter will be addressed through alegislative change.
In the interim NZPI members are advised to apply to IRD for a certificate of exemption which will address the issue of withholding tax, but will not address the issues around GST payments.
The NZPI will continue to lobby the government for a more permanent solution to the problem and will advise members of any progress on dealing with this issue.
