Papa Pounamu and NZPI in the ongoing promotion of increasing Māori participation in the planning profession alongside sponsors WSP were absolutely stoked to present the very first Papa Pounamu Whakatutukitanga Scholarship
as part of the 2020 NZPI Annual Awards. This scholarship compliments the Papa Pounamu Distinguished Service to Māori Planning Award, in that it focuses on the development of rangatahi into the planning profession.
Of Kāi Tahu iwi, Kāti Taoka and Kāti Moki hapū, Lucy Sanson is starting her third year studying a Bachelor of Resource and Environmental Planning at Massey University. Lucy has previously worked for Kāi Tahu business, Oha Honey, and provides planting plans to encourage landowners to plant native trees for bees.
WSP sponsorship provided $2000 towards her studies and employment over the summer, where she joined the Auckland planning team enjoying a variety of roles and responsibilities. Lucys' 10 week internship is now coming to an end , her award was proudly presented last week by Reginald Proffit (NZPI Board member and past Papa Pounamu Chair) and Ian Blair (Managing Director WSP NZ).
