This workshop is focused on building an understanding of:

  • Key concepts and values that underpin the Maori world view of the environment
  • How to integrate Maori values into resource management decision-making and practice
  • Facilitation of tikanga Maori in Resource Management Act (RMA) settings

This workshop draws on the material in the Maori Values and World Views Supplement to the Making Good Decisions Programme and is designed for all types of practitioners under the RMA including planners at all levels (both public and private sector), decision-makers and those involved in advising councils. It will also be relevant for applicants and submitters.

The day will involve presentations, discussions and exercises aimed at improving knowledge of Maori values and world views and how to incorporate these into resource management decision-making and practice. This will be supported by the knowledge of tikanga Maori from a local iwi representative/Maori commissioner experienced in resource management. At the end of the day participants should have developed a good understanding of why is it important to take into account Maori values and world views under the RMA and practical methods to integrate these into resource management practice and decision making.
